Osmotic Hair Styles and Borg-ing
1/19/2009
Teamwork, can it go too far? We all know the benefits of a performing team and the stages they go through: Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing (Tuckman model) well maybe there should be a further step after this which I would like to call “Borg-ing”. “Borg-ing”, by my definition is to become Borg like. I don’t mean the teams all become cybernetically enhanced humanoid drones…
What I mean is that after the performing stage a true Scrum team should "Borg" and become organized as an inter-connected collective with a hive mind at a completely subconscious level. Why do I say this? I hear you say. Well, let me explain my recent observation of a Scrum team:
The said team has been together for over 12 months and have, without a doubt transcended to the "Performing" stage of the Tuckman model. A certain team member who happened to be follicly challenged (going bald) had taken the option of avoiding the comb over look and going for the more modern approach of shaving the hair close all over the head (bare with me, I’m going somewhere). A short period later (the duration of which I’m not sure, lets say a couple of months) another team member appeared on a Monday morning with a similar short, shaved hair style.
Time went on and the team kept performing and delivering, but wait! I turned around and looked at the team and it struck me like a bolt of lightning. EVERY TEAM MEMBER HAD THE SAME SHORT SHAVED HAIR! Now apparently they claim it was just coincidence, but I say its Osmotic Hair Styling one of the first indicators to the onset of "Borg-ing".
Ok, yes I admit, we had also just started the beginning of the Australian summer here in Brisbane but to put it down to pure hot weather would be seriously underselling the team’s achievements.
